How to make a decision on laser eye surgery

LASIK, or Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure intended to reduce a person’s dependency on glasses or contact lenses. It permanently changes the shape of the cornea through precise removal of corneal tissue to change its focusing power.

Not all people who require vision correction are good candidates for LASIK. Some prohibiting factors include people who require a change in prescription each year, or someone with a disease affects wound healing such as diabetes or HIV. A good corneal specialist or eye surgeon should be able to provide alternative procedures and determine which one is best for you.

Once you decide to have LASIK, research surgeons in your area. Make sure the eye surgeon you select is a corneal specialist and is board-certified in ophthalmology. Check his or her experience. Studies indicate that a well-qualified surgeon will have performed at least 2,000 surgeries.

A Nidek laser is equipped with eye tracker and it can also treat large diameter pupils up to 10mm. The Nidek EC5000 works especially well for nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

The LADARVision system is an advanced Excimer laser system that combines the only patented laser radar eye tracker with a unique small spot laser beam. These features were designed to increase the accuracy in individual treatments.

The LADARTracker accurately tracks eye movements during surgery so you do not have to worry about holding your eye still. The tracker senses the position of your eye 4,000 times per second, guiding placement of the laser beam with pinpoint accuracy.

LADARTracker refers to laser-radar, a tracking device originally developed by NASA. CustomCornea is the only custom treatment approved by the FDA to treat higher order aberrations (the need to have custom surgery and one main cause of poor night vision). CustomCornea is also able to treat larger optical zones than other “custom lasers.”

Pentacam is the newest standard in refractive surgery mapping. The Pentacam is more accurate in testing the back surface of the cornea. Pentacam is replacing the Orbscan as the cutting edge in mapping technology.

The Ocular Response Analyzer is also an exciting new technology which measures the corneal biomechanical structure. The Ocular Response Analyzer can pick up corneal disease before it manifests on corneal mapping devices. Picking up corneal weaknesses with the Ocular Response Analyzer can save a patient from a potential poor outcome.
